Established in 1940, the Tacoma Housing Authority is an independent municipal corporation formed under Washington State law. It operates executive, housing development, finance and information technology, community services and human resources departments. With a workforce of more than 90 people, the authority offers real estate acquisition, asset development and property modernization services for residential and nonresidential communities. It offers housing facilities for low- and moderate-income families, senior citizens and people with disabilities. The Tacoma Housing Authority offers a range of homeownership programs that assists with the education and employment of individuals. It also offers housing development, demolition, property management and home purchase assistance services. The authority runs the Housing Choice Voucher Program, which provides rental assistance to more than 3,500 households and over 12,000 individuals. Its affiliates include the National Low Income Housing Coalition, National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials and Council of Large Public Housing Authorities. The Tacoma Housing Authority maintains a location in Tacoma, Wash.
