El Hajj Malik El Shabazz School, or PS/IS 262, is a public school that serves students from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade. The school is named after the African-American leader, Malcolm X. African-American culture is celebrated at the school year round and the PTA is very active. Joeletha Ferguson serves as principal.
PS/IS 262 follows the Joseph S. Renzulli School Wide Enrichment Model, which encourages instructional flexibility for schools to adopt their own unique programs based on local resources and unique school dynamics. The school participates in the Reading First program (grades 2 and 3), Learning Through Expanded Arts Program for early childhood students, Chess in the Schools Program (grades 3 and 4), and the Noel Pointer trings Program, where students are taught to read sheet music and play the violin (grades 2-5).
