Established in 1631, the Fire Department is administered by the government of the City of Boston in Massachusetts. The department is responsible for protecting life, property and environment through emergency medical and fire prevention and education services. The Fire Department serves a population of more than 550,000 spread over an area of over 45 square miles. It operates more than 30 fire stations and employs nearly 1600 staff members. The department maintains marine, special, rehabilitation, brush fire, hydrant thawing and hazardous material units, as well as several engine, ladder and rescue companies.
