BB&T started as Branch and Hadley in 1872, with the simple purpose of accepting time deposits, paying interest and lending money in Wilson County, N.C. In 1907, Alpheus Branch bought out his partners, promoting another name change. At this time it become the first state-chartered bank in North Carolina. Five years later it adopted BB&T, which stands for Branch Banking and Trust.
In the mid-1990s, BB&T began acquiring numerous local and regional banks. Today it has 1,850 branches predominantly in 13 states.
