The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for the organization and administration of all town-sponsored recreation activities and facilities. The division also is responsible for the care and maintenance of all town parks, open space, municipal grounds, athletic fields, school grounds, street trees and cemeteries. The department provides a wide variety of recreation opportunities to enhance the quality of life in Glastonbury. Town-sponsored programs, public open space and recreation facilities work together to meet the diverse needs and interests of the community and its members. The Parks Division coordinates the care and maintenance of all town-owned parks, open space, municipal grounds, athletic fields, school grounds, street trees and cemeteries. Developed recreation facilities include a skate park, two outdoor pools, one indoor pool, a pond suitable for swimming, numerous children's playgrounds, 10 tennis courts, an all -weather outdoor running track and synthetic turf field, a covered picnic pavilion, outdoor basketball courts, a nine-hole golf course, picnic areas and numerous athletic fields. A full-time work force of 13 is supported with part-time and seasonal help as needed. The Parks Superintendent, a state certified arborist, also serves as the tree warden. The Parks and Recreation director is Raymond Purtell.
