Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 by Dr. Birut Mary Galdikas. Dedicated to the conservation, protection, and understanding of orangutans and their rainforest habitat in Borneo, OFI rescues, rehabilitates, and releases ex-captive orangutans back into the wild. They have protected 1.5 million acres of rainforest, saved numerous captive and orphaned orangutans, and work with the Indonesian government and local communities to expand national parks, establish reserves, and replant degraded forest areas.
Through their conservation outreach, education, and scientific research programs, OFI raises awareness about the plight of orangutans and other wildlife species. They also offer a Foster Parent Program, where individuals can contribute to the care and rehabilitation of displaced and orphaned orangutans at the OFI Care Centre and Quarantine facility. By fostering an orangutan, individuals provide the necessary medical, dietary, and emotional support for these animals to thrive.
