In cases like murder or previous failure to appear for a court date there is no bail and you will have to wait for the first court date. In other cases the person will be booked, and released on their own a few hours later. The charges, the nature and seriousness of the offense, the arresting law enforcement agency may elect to simply issue a citation to the individual for a future court date.
